Chandhok takes sportscar role

Karun Chandhok named in JRM Racing line-up for the new World Endurance Championship season
Having seemingly missed out on the chance to secure an F1 race seat for the 2012 season, Karun Chandhok has elected to switch his focus to sportscar racing after being confirmed with JRM Racing for the new World Endurance Championship season.

The Indian racer, who held the position of test and reserve driver with Team Lotus last season, had revealed over the festive period that he was considering moving into sportscars [See separate story HERE] and has now been confirmed as one of the three drivers as JRM moves in prototype competition for the first time.

The team, which took the FIA GT1 title last year running a Nissan GT-R, will field a new Honda Performance Development ARX-03a in the series, with former F1 driver David Brabham and Scot Peter Dumbreck joining Chandhok behind the wheel.

The World Endurance Championship will include the Sebring 12 Hours and the Le Mans 24 Hours.

"I'm very excited to join JRM Racing for the new World Endurance Championship this year,” Chandhok said. “Of course, I am very happy to be racing again. At the end of 2011, I explored the options to race in F1 and, when it didn't look like a possibility, I decided to look outside and the WEC presents the next-best option.

“Doing races which are six, twelve and even 24-hours long is going to be a new challenge. And, while I'm looking forward to the whole championship, obviously to be the first Indian to start at the famous Sebring 12-hours and the Le Mans 24-hours races will be a huge honor."

Amazing logic there, claiming Chandhok will fail miserably in LMES because he didn't manage to establish himself in F1. Against... David Brabham, who really set the world alight in F1. And Peter Dumbreck, the superstar racer of... Japanese F3 and DTM. Please, you're not making any sense. Now don't get me wrong, I think both Brabham and Dumbreck are quality drivers, I just don't get what on earth would make you draw the conclusion that they are somehow in a different league to Chandhok, who happens to be a GP2 race winner?
