Vergne keeps focus on the present

Jean-Eric Vergne deflects talk of a future with Red Bull Racing by focusing on the present

Jean-Eric Vergne insists his focus during his debut season in F1 is firmly on the job at hand, and not the possibility that it could lead to a role with Red Bull Racing in future.

Vergne will make his debut this season in the Toro Rosso team after Red Bull elected to field a new-look line-up in its 'second' team, with Vergne and Daniel Ricciardo drafted in to replace Jaime Alguersuari and Sebastien Buemi.

Both drivers have been linked with a role within the Red Bull team when Mark Webber elects to hand up his helmet but despite the possibility that he could be in line for one of the top drives on the grid in future, Vergne said his only concern was the present.

"Since my karting days I've always had the philosophy to think only of the present," he told Servus TV. "For example, I've never thought about Formula One, but only the season I was in. In 2012 I drove for Toro Rosso; 2013 does not interest me now. I will give my best and then we'll see what comes up."

Team-mate Ricciardo, who has half a season of experience from his time with HRT last year, admitted that a move to Red Bull was his ultimate aim but insisted that it would only happen if he could prove himself first.

"Of course I'd be happy to drive for Red Bull – that's the big goal of all the Red Bull juniors,” he said. "If we do everything right and we get the right results, then perhaps we will succeed in a year or two or three."

If somehow Ricciardo was to have a solid season and let's say in 2013 or 2014 he was in a Red Bull and was doing a solid job, that would be a great ascent. From a mediocre team to a middle of the pack and then a powerhouse. Sure it's a long way away and so far only a vision, but it's definitely possible.

Vergne has toned down his over confidence and ego in this comment. Reality Check? And yes I know about his Managers apology @ David Given Daniels past efforts in other categories and the devotion he puts towards the sport I am confident we will see a competitive young man on the grid.
