Jean-Eric Vergne says hopes he can follow the lead set by Sebastian Vettel in using his drive with Toro Rosso as a launch-pad into a top line F1 role.
Despite previously stating that he was focusing 'on the present' [See separate story HERE
], Verge admitted that he couldn't ignore the fact that his role with Toro Rosso could lead to a move to Red Bull.
Previously, Vettel secured Toro Rosso's only F1 victory at Monza in 2008 before moving up the Red Bull line-up for 2009 – going on to secure back-to-back titles in 2010 and 2011.
"I've earned this chance after a challenging year and by virtue of my success," Vergne told RMC
radio. "It was not easy getting here. Red Bull have given me this chance but if I don't put in the performances and results I could be kicked out.
“Of course Toro Rosso is not a team with whom you can fight to win a grand prix or the Championship but it is part of the path already laid out when I entered the Red Bull junior programme. At the bottom is the way place where Sebastian Vettel started so why should I not be like him and hope to get to Championship-winning Red Bull team.
"We are not yet in 2013..."
Vergne and team-mate Daniel Ricciardo have both been linked to Red Bull after being moved into Toro Rosso race seats for 2012.
