Volkswagen has once again been linked with a move into Formula 1 in the coming years.

Speculation linking VW with the sport is nothing new, with the suggestion having been made and denied by officials a number of times in recent years.

However, motor sport representative Wolfgang Durheimer has now suggested that he will make a proposal to the VW board to look into the possibility of entering F1 in 2018.

Such a move, which reports suggest would be as an engine supplier before looking to purchase an existing team, would be used to try and help boost VW's profile in a number of key markets around the globe.

Although VW has competed successfully in off-road competition in recent years, and will enter the World Rally Championship next season, a move into F1 would provide a much bigger opportunity to showcase the Volkswagen brand to a global audience.

"Later this year I will put forward proposals to the executive group for (involvement in) not only the racing series that we do already," he told business magazine Wirtschaftswoche. "It is true - in America, Asia and the Middle East, we are not sufficiently represented in motor sport."
