VW linked with F1 again

VW finds itself linked with F1 - once again
Volkswagen has once again been linked with a move into Formula 1 in the coming years.

Speculation linking VW with the sport is nothing new, with the suggestion having been made and denied by officials a number of times in recent years.

However, motor sport representative Wolfgang Durheimer has now suggested that he will make a proposal to the VW board to look into the possibility of entering F1 in 2018.

Such a move, which reports suggest would be as an engine supplier before looking to purchase an existing team, would be used to try and help boost VW's profile in a number of key markets around the globe.

Although VW has competed successfully in off-road competition in recent years, and will enter the World Rally Championship next season, a move into F1 would provide a much bigger opportunity to showcase the Volkswagen brand to a global audience.

"Later this year I will put forward proposals to the executive group for (involvement in) not only the racing series that we do already," he told business magazine Wirtschaftswoche. "It is true - in America, Asia and the Middle East, we are not sufficiently represented in motor sport."

I'm not sure more manufacturer teams is what F1 needs. I mean look at how increased manufacturer involvement has damaged F1 already, not to mention MotoGP or WRC. Team-wise I think the US model is pretty interesting, they have some pretty iconic privateer teams as well as manufacturers involvement as suppliers, and MotoGP is trying to get there aswell with the new CRT rule. Have to say I am unsure if VW would be truly committed or id they'd just bail if things didn't go to plan soon enough or as soon as they hit hard times - much like BMW, Toyota or even Honda and Renault. I think what we need is RACING TEAMS, who are there to race. Not manufacturers who run their teams as marketing projects to create brand awareness.
