Lotus pair eager to challenge

Kimi Raikkonen and Romain Grosjean hopes Lotus can provide a strong 2012 F1 car
Kimi Raikkonen and Romain Grosjean say they are eager to fight towards the front of the field with the new Lotus E20 after the car was launched at the team's Enstone base.

Raikkonen makes his return to the grid this season for the first time since leaving Ferrari at the end of 2009.

The Finn will be one of six champions on the grid during the year ahead and he said he was hopeful that the former Renault team had produced a car that was capable of running at the front.

"It will be something slightly different to what it was like when I was in Formula 1 before, with a different team and different regulations, but everybody's different,” he said. “For some people it's more difficult to get used to new stuff, and it depends a lot on the car. If you have a good car it makes your life easier than if you have an average car. I was pretty happy after the test we did two weeks ago [in a 2010-spec car] and it felt pretty normal already.

"I think it will be okay but before the first race it's really difficult to say still. We'll wait and see but I'm happy with how everything is going.

“I think these people know how to build a good car, and even the biggest teams cannot produce a winning car every year. They are very capable people and they have a good feeling about things and they're pushing hard so hopefully we will get good results."

Team-mate Grosjean meanwhile said he too was expecting big things from the E20 as he returns to the grid after his disappointing half season in 2009, when he failed to impress after being called up to replace Nelson Piquet Jr.

“I'm feeling good for this season and I'm proud to have been chosen as one of the race drivers,” he said. “I have a bit more knowledge of the Pirelli tyres but I think I will be able to learn a lot from Kimi and we have to work together to help bring the team forwards which is our main goal.

“We are all expecting a lot from this year. I've seen the car coming together from the beginning almost and we are all now waiting to see it on track. After the four days of testing [at Jerez], we'll have more of an idea of how the season will be.”
