McLaren reveals dummy exhausts

McLaren fit dummy exhausts to its new car for launch in Woking

McLaren team boss Martin Whitmarsh has revealed that the MP4-27 feature false exhausts during its launch in an attempt to fool rival teams.

Speaking to Auto Motor und Sport, Whitmarsh revealed that the team had fitted plastic parts in order to try and hide the exact design of its exhaust system prior to the car turning a wheel for the first time in Jerez this week.

"The exhaust was made of plastic, you won't see those components in that form again," he said. "The car will look different at Jerez to what it looked last week, and a lot different in Australia.

“At the weekend at Idiada (Spain) we did an aero test where we had a series of news parts that were not on the car at Woking."

Ferrari also failed to feature a finalised exhaust system on the new F2012 when it was launched at Maranello, although Force India's new car was closer to its final configuration when revealed at Silverstone.
