Outstanding Vettel a modern-day Fangio, says Moss

Sir Stirling Moss: I can't see, other than his natural ability, how he [Sebastian Vettel] is that good, how he can be that good. I think he is quite outstanding...

Sir Stirling Moss has hailed two-times F1 world champion Sebastian Vettel and has said in many ways he is like a 'modern-day' Juan Manuel Fangio.

Fangio, considered by many to be one of the greatest F1 drivers' of all time, won the F1 drivers' title five times during the 1950s. Moss made the comparison while speaking at the Motor Sport magazine Hall of Fame event.

“Vettel is a modern Fangio,” Moss said according to Reuters. “I can't see, other than his natural ability, how he is that good, how he can be that good.

“I think Vettel is quite outstanding, but then he has got the best car, which is fair enough because normally the best driver gets the best car.

“Fangio went around and took what he wanted and one took whatever was left. Where we're lucky is that Vettel has a great sense of humour. He is a damn good world champion.

“I can think of a lot of other people who get to that position and they don't give back as much as they get out, but he really does.”

Looking to 2012, Moss added that Britain's Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button will both have their work cut out if they are to beat the Red Bull #1.

“Their problem is that they're against a better outfit,” Moss explained. “The Red Bull is so good, it's enormously difficult to be as good as that is and I don't think they are yet.

"Vettel is outstanding [too]. They [Hamilton and Button] are up there, but not as far as he is. Lewis does funny things, so one can't be sure [how he will do over the season]. I would put my money on Jenson. Yes I would.

“Lewis is terrific, he really is exceptionally quick, but Jenson thinks about certain things better than Lewis will. Like when it's raining and whether or not to go in for a change of tyres.

“For all those sorts of things he has a better understanding of it, and experience is a lot of it,” Moss concluded.

I treat comparisons of drivers in different eras with a fair degree of scepticism. However, Sir Stirling is probably one of the few people living who can make such a comparison with any credibility at all.
