Round two of the 2012 F1 world championship tore up the formbook with an unexpected top three, and several notable names not scoring at all.

Fernando Alonso, in 'that' Ferrari, came out best after an afternoon interrupted by heavy rain, the safety car and, ultimately, the red flag, but had to withstand persistent pressure from Sauber's Sergio Perez, who showed just why people believe he is the natural successor to Felipe Massa.

Lewis Hamilton once again saw pole position transformed into third pl;ace by the end of the race, but wasn't quite as disheartened as he appeared in Melbourne a week ago. Team-mate Jenson Button, meanwhile, squandered a second win of the season with an untidy afternoon that got worse once he'd clipped the back of Narain Karthikeyan's HRT.

Mark Webber repeated his fourth place from round one, while reigning world champion - and Red Bull team-mate - Sebastian Vettel failed to score after also falling foul of Karthikeyan.

Kimi Raikkonen, Bruno Senna - recording his best F1 finishg after an opening lap stop for a new nose - Paul di Resta, Jean-Eric Vergne - notching his first points - Nico Hulkenberg and Michael Schumacher, recovering from being punted into a spin, completed the scorers. Pastor Maldonado should have opened his account but for an engine failure...
