Force India hit with large costs bill

Force India ordered to pay legal costs of Mike Gascoyne and 1 Malaysia Racing after judge rules on IP case
Force India has been ordered to pay £650,000 in legal costs to rivals Caterham and chief technical officer Mike Gascoyne in relation to dispute over intellectual property in F1.

The Silverstone-based team was awarded £21,000 in damages itself earlier this year having accused Caterham – then known as Lotus Racing – of copying parts of its design when it was putting together its first F1 car.

A judge at the time rejected claims from Force India of 'systematic copying', with a further hearing then determing the award of legal costs from the case.

The judge has now awarded costs on a full indemnity basis to Gascoyne, dating back to Novemember 2011, with costs on a standard basis before then.

A similar ruling over costs awarded to Caterham's parent company the 1 Malaysia Racing Team means Force India is now facing a legal bill of well over £1 million when its own costs are also taken into account.

The team, which had previously said it was going to ask the FIA to look into the matter, has so far refused to make any comment on the ruling.

So Caterham copy FI's car and the court award 20k damages then land FI with 650k bill, HRT just go and copy the McLaren its the cheapest way, F1 just replace R&D with a good lawyer
