Pedro de la Rosa insists that he has no idea where HRT should expect to be at the end of the current F1 season, insisting that the team is focused firmly on simply improving on a race by race basis.

Having failed to even qualify in Australia, the Spanish team has made solid progress as it looks to close the gap to Caterham and Marussia at the back of the field.

De la Rosa will hope for a strong run again this weekend in its home event at Catalunya and the experienced racer insisted that progress was the order of the day for both the Spanish GP and the remainder of the campaign.

"We are improving race by race," he said. "We have made the car a lot quicker. Don't forget at the first grand prix we did not qualify and gradually we have been closing the gap to pole position. That's what we have to aim for: race by race, closing the gap, making sure that our car is a little bit quicker than it was at the previous grand prix.

"After that, at the end of the year, we will see. We don't have to set ourselves any targets other than making the team more competitive race by race."

HRT returns to action this weekend having missed the recent three-day test at Mugello in order to focus on moving into its new base in Madrid but de la Rosa said his focus remained fully on his role on track and not currently on helping to develop the team off it.

"We're establishing ourselves; restructuring the team; we are growing," he said. "But really I'm not playing any different role than any other race driver would do. I'm part of the team; I'm a race driver; I'm experienced. If they need my advice on anything, I am there. But I'm not playing any special role other than driving as fast as I can and giving good feedback about the car."
