Heading into the Spanish Grand Prix and the start of the European F1 season, few would have predicted that it was the event where Williams would return to the top step of the podium for the first time in eight years.

That however was exactly what happened as Pastor Maldonado delivered the drive of his life to become the first Venezuelan to win an F1 race. It was a popular success for the Grove-based team after the troubles it encountered last season although it was a success overshadowed somewhat by the fire that broke out in the Williams garage 90 minutes after the race finished.

Maldonado came home three seconds clear of Fernando Alonso's Ferrari after the home hero missed out on a potential victory when he was delayed by a backmarker prior to his second top, while Kimi Raikkonen completed the podium in third having run out of laps to catch the top two after a storming final stint.

Raikkonen's third place was the highlight of another strong race for Lotus as Romain Grosjean took fourth, with a sizeable gap back to fifth placed Kamui Kobayashi; who bounced back from his qualifying misfortune to score solid points for Sauber.

Sixth for Sebastian Vettel came despite a drive-through penalty and the need to change the nose of his Red Bull while Nico Rosberg lost pace in the latter stages of the race and was lucky to see off Lewis Hamilton in the closing laps - Hamilton having battled his way up the order from the back of the field to score after losing what had been a fine pole position after qualifying.
