Maldonado praises Williams

Pastor Maldonado praises Williams for the way it has battled to recover from the fire it suffered in Spain in time for Monaco
Pastor Maldonado has praised the Williams team for the way it has battled to prepare for the Monaco Grand Prix after the fire in its garage at Catalunya.

The team was celebrating Maldonado's victory in the Spanish Grand Prix when the fire broke out, causing extensive damage to its equipment but luckily not causing any serious injury either to those in the garage at the time or the to paddock members who rushed to fight the flames.

Williams have since worked round the clock to prepare for the Monaco race this weekend and Maldonado was quick to praise the work that had gone in to ensuring the team was ready for the blue riband event on the calendar.

“Since the fire we've been working so hard to re-build everything and the guys have done a very good job because we are ready to race, with everything we need to deliver the maximum,” he said. “I must say that the guys have been working full days to try to have everything ready for this race, so a great job from them. [Also] I need to thank all the teams who have helped us, even offering extra stuff for this race.”

Maldonado will hope to repay the team for the work that has gone in over the past week with another strong result in Monaco on a circuit where he has won in the past while working his way through the ranks.

However, the Venezuelan admitted it wouldn't be an easy task given how competitive the field currently has been through the first five races of the year.

"It's really special to win, especially the first one," he said. "But for sure it's going to be difficult now because the cars and the teams are so close. Everything can make a difference, we need to put everything together to make a step forward and I need to say that Williams is doing a very good job at the moment.

"All the people are very motivated, they are pushing so hard - me too - there's a very good feeling and atmosphere in the team but still we need to improve our car. We are not at 100 per cent at the moment; we are not the best team but we are not that far (away), we are there and we need to try to improve every time.”

"I've always been so quick here, especially in GP2 and World Series as well. I will do my best again and we'll see; I think it's still possible to be competitive here."
