Perez takes gearbox penalty

Sergio Perez returns to back of Monaco GP grid after opting for new gearbox.

Sergio Perez and the Sauber team have decided to capitalise on his poor qualifying performance to fit a new gearbox to the #15 C31 for the Monaco Grand Prix.

The Mexican crashed out of the opening phase of qualifying on Saturday afternoon, and was due to start at the back of the grid. Ironically, when FP3 assailant Pastor Maldonado then decided to add a gearbox penalty to his ten-place sanction for the contact, Perez was promoted one spot, but then dropped back to 24th after deciding that there was nothing to lose by making his own change, despite the current 'box not having covered the requisite five race weekends.

It is the second time this season that Perez has opted to change his gearbox ahead of a race, having also done so in Australia at the opening round.
