Maldonado: It was a weekend to forget

Pastor Maldonado endures a weekend to forget in Monaco
After his stunning success in Spain, Pastor Maldonado was left to reflect on a weekend to forget in Monte Carlo after retiring on the opening lap of the Monaco Grand Prix.

The Venezeulan has gone into the weekend on a high after a his maiden victory in Catalunya but was forced to start from the back of the grid after being penalised ten places for a clash with Sergio Perez in practice and a further five spots for a gearbox change.

Maldonado then crashed into the rear of Pedro de la Rosa at St Devote on the first lap when the field was forced to slow to avoid a spinning Romain Grosjean, picking up a damaged front wing in the process.

With the wing stuck under the front of his car, Maldonado then went into the barriers at the hairpin and was forced to retire from a race where he been tipped to again impress prior to the weekend getting underway.

“It was a difficult weekend from my side,” he said. “I am disappointed because I was expecting something more from the race. We had a great strategy, but after a good start I was in the middle of the track, and got a bit unlucky caught up in cars fighting ahead. I locked up and couldn't stop the car on the dirty side of the track at turn six.

“The weekend was compromised after we received the penalties yesterday so we are now looking forward to the next race. We have a competitive car and it will be completely different in Canada, it's a different track and a different situation.”

The only plus point for Williams was a single point for Bruno Senna in tenth place, the Brazilian inheriting the place late on when Jean-Eric Vergne was forced to make a second stop in the final ten laps.

“I'm happy we got a point from a very tough race,” he said. “We deserved more and I felt we could be stronger than this, but today it didn't happen and so we did the best we could do. It's good to be in the top ten but I have bitter-sweet feelings. Now we are fired up for Canada and I'm really looking forward to that race. I have a lot of confidence that we are getting there with the set-up of the car, so I can't wait to get going again.”
