Ferrari launches auction to aid earthquake victims

Ferrari seeks to aid victims of the Italian earthquakes with special auction
Ferrari has launched an auction to raise funds for victims of the recent earthquakes in the Emilia Romagna region of Italy.

While the main draw in the auction is a special Ferrari 599XX Evo that will be presented to the winning bidder by Fernando Alonso and Felipe Massa - but which has a reserve price of €1.35 million – a number of items of F1 memorabilia are also on offer.

They include a 2008 V8 engine that was used to help Ferrari win the constructors' championship, a nose cone from the Ferrari F60, autographed helmets, gloves and sweatsuits belonging to both Alonso and Massa and a Giancarlo Fisichella race suit.

For those fans unable to afford the auction prices, proceeds of the sale of watches through the online Ferrari store will also be donated to families affected by the earthquakes.

“I am sure we can count on the generosity of those close to Ferrari around the world who have always kindly supported this kind of initiative in the past,” Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo said. “A terrible earthquake struck our region and the people we know, and together we want to help the families of the victims in this time of need.

“We are holding an auction of some truly unique and exclusive items for all Ferrari's friends and enthusiasts to whom I would already like to express my heart-felt thanks.”

The auction cites a felipe massa as: "Adorned by the yellow and green colours of the Brazilian flag, Felipe Massa’s original helmet is autographed by the champion." Not to knock a guy when he's down, but champion of what?
