Vettel claims Canada GP pole

Sebastian Vettel put pole position for the Canadian GP out of reach of his rivals with two flying laps in his Red Bull.
Sebastian Vettel proved that the latest fuss over Red Bull's RB8 was a 'hole' lot of nothing by claiming a dominant 32nd career pole position on the roads around the Ile Notre Dame in Montreal.

The German posted two laps good enough to take top spot, denying Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso in the process, as the FP3 result provided a good guide to qualifying form. Among the last to complete his first shot at pole, Vettel dropped the target time into the 1min 13secs bracket by going fully half a second faster than Hamilton had previously managed, with Alonso slotting into second.

Second time around, the world champion was waiting to be last across the line, delivering a psychological blow by further lowering the benchmark to 1min 13.784secs. Hamilton was next up but, despite improving his personal best, could not break out of the 1min 14s, while Alonso failed to better his earlier mark and had to settle for a slightly miffed third.

Mark Webber was the last man to complete a flying lap, as Michael Schumacher aborted his effort, but the Monaco polesitter could only manage fourth best, putting him ahead of Nico Rosberg, Felipe Mass and Romain Grosjean. Paul di Resta, having initially appeared happy to settle for an out-lap and free tyre choice on raceday, ventured back out late on to snatch eighth from Schumacher and Jenson Button, the Briton parking up in the pits with a couple of minutes to go in an effort to give McLaren different tyre strategies for Sunday.

Full session times and qualifying report now available.
