Sebastian Vettel was beaming from ear-to-ear on Saturday and waving his forefinger with gusto after delivering a vintage performance in Montreal in qualifying.
"I think we have a great car," he said, hailing what he called a "a fantastic weekend so far" in Canada. "This time we got it right in qualifying and I'm looking forward to the race tomorrow. It should be an interesting one!"
Red Bull had looked solid but hardly in dominating form ahead of qualifying, but then everything just seemed to come together for Vettel in qualifying as the track warmed up.
"We trusted the car that we had, we were able to go with the circuit and tried to read the conditions, so I was very happy in qualifying," he agreed. "I was able to always get a little bit quicker."
He'd started slowly in qualifying - staying in the garage initially to avoid the first rush of cars out onto the track at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve - but was soon topping the times in each of the three rounds of qualifying, somewhat to his surprise.
"It looked very tight in the beginning to be honest," he said. "I knew it would be within a tenth, but in the end it seemed that we could make a bit more of a difference, which obviously is good.
"We just tried to get the maximum out of every run, and we seemed to improve on every run and even we seemed to chip away a little bit from the guys behind, which was a bit of a surprise because I thought going into qualifying that it would be extremely tight," he added. "On this track it's very difficult to make a difference, so I'm very happy."
The
Red Bull certainly seemed happier in the sunny, warm conditions on Saturday than it had been on the overcast Friday, and with Sunday expected to be a scorcher in Montreal Vettel was hoping that trend would continue.
"It seems so far this year, for us at least, the cooler it is, the more we were in trouble; the warmer it is, the better it is," he acknowledged. "I hope if it's warmer tomorrow, we can keep continuing that trend. We have seen that on Sundays a lot of things can happen so we have to be aware of whatever comes up and that explains the strategy and so on."
