Perez targets Silverstone podium

Sergio Perez: I think our car will be good in Silverstone

Sergio Perez will be gunning for his third rostrum of the season at the British Grand Prix.

Perez finished ninth in Valencia last weekend, despite only qualifying 15th for the second race in succession.

Looking ahead to the ninth round in the 2012 F1 World Championship, the Mexican added that grid position will be critical if he is to realise his target of battling for a top-three finish.

“I really like the Silverstone circuit, said the Sauber driver. “It is a special Grand Prix – because of the fans and the atmosphere and also for me personally. I lived in Oxford for three years and I have quite a few friends in England.

“I have won there in Formula 3 and in GP2 and also last year my first F1 race was good. I came seventh and this was actually my best race result in 2011. Back then it was a crazy race in difficult weather conditions with the track drying.

“I think our car will be good in Silverstone and I want to fight for another podium there.

“In my view in Silverstone it is even more difficult to overtake than it was in Valencia, therefore qualifying is high priority on the job list. I need a better grid position than recently.”

Its so encouraging to see all these drivers wanting to fight for a podium rather than wishing to be in the last 3 places. Its time for the FIA to introduce a 24 place podium.... (joke)

It seems there may be a trend establishing now, the favourites are (not in any particular order) Vettel, Alonso, Hamilton, Webber, a Lotus and so on. Then Wiiliams, Mercedes, Sauber, Force India who could all pull off a big upset. Even Button if his car suits him ! I I was a betting man I would put money on Vettel..
