Lewis Hamilton has been selected to carry the Olympic torch on part of its ongoing journey around the UK prior to the start of the Oympic Games in London this summer.

The McLaren driver will be one of the torchbearers on 9 July when the torch makes its way from Luton to Oxford, with initial plans for him to carry the flame in his home town of Stevenage being cancelled given that the torch will visit the Hertfordshire town this weekend while Hamilton is competing in the British Grand Prix at Silverstone.

Hamilton will be the latest celebrity figure to carry the torch with others including radio DJ Chris Moyles, cricketer Paul Collingwood, former footballer Sir Bobby Charlton and singer will.i.am.

"I am so honoured to have been asked to do it," Hamilton said. "I never in a million years would have thought I'd get to do something so cool.

"I've no idea at this stage where I'll be running. But to be selected to do my bit is a real privilege."
