This year's Goodwood Festival of Speed's motto 'Young Guns – Born to Win' focused on young talents from all eras and disciplines of motorsport, who became legends by going fast and winning.
Sebastian Vettel, Mark Webber, Lewis Hamilton, Jenson Button, Nico Rosberg, Heikki Kovalainen and Daniel Ricciardo were representing the current Formula 1 field at Goodwood, but 'Young guns' from the past who shook the establishment were also present: Sir Stirling Moss, Sir Jackie Stewart, Emerson Fittipaldi, John Surtees, Jacky Ickx and Alain Prost were all there to sign autographs and to put pedal to the metal.
The current Formula 1 world champion Sebastian Vettel has been enjoying his first time at Goodwood, making several burn-outs and entertaining the crowd. This is also the first time for the 4-time F1 world champion 'Le Professeur' Alain Prost to appear at Goodwood and he seemed to enjoy it very much, driving his Renault RE40 Turbo up the hill. Prost had his own dedicated exhibition celebrating his career, with all his F1 cars from the 1980 McLaren-Ford until the 1993 Williams-Renault.
Emerson Fittipaldi was re-united with his very first F1 car, the Lotus 49C – Cosworth, from 1970, sporting his original helmet colours. Apart from driving the McLaren-Mercedes Grand Prix car, Jenson Button drove the enhanced McLaren road-car the MP4-12C as well. The 1972 Le Mans winner Matra-Simca MS670 (with Graham Hill and Henri Pescarolo) was driven up the hill by Damon and Josh Hill, sporting that iconic helmet design.
Beatiful F1 cars from Lotus (from the very beginning until the 1990 car, to celebrate Lotus Engineering's 60th birthday), Williams (even Button's first F1 car from 2000), Ferrari (including Gilles Villeneuve's 312/T3 from 1978), Renault (with the very first Turbo in F1, from 1977), Euro-Alfa Romeo Turbo (from 1983), Arrows-BMW Turbo (from 1986), Zakspeed (Martin Brundle's car from1987, which which he scored the German team's only GP points), Leyton House March-Judd from 1990 (designed by Adrian Newey) and the iconic green-liveried Jordan-Ford 191 (Schumacher's first F1 car) were all present.
The Le Mans winner Audi R18 E-Tron Quattro and the Toyota Hybrid were all present, but judging from the crowd's reaction, several spectators came to Goodwood to see the monsters from yester-years, and the current event did not dissapoint. Six-wheeler Formula 1 cars from Tyrrell, March and Williams were all there, alongside extremely loud Can-Am cars from McLaren, Lola and Shadow. 'Americana' was represented by Ford Mustangs, Indycars, a NASCAR Cup-car and truck, but American show-man Jesse James was also there with an 8 litre Baja Truck.
The future may be for electric cars even on race tracks, but there will always be a desire for real motorsport enthusiasts for loud engine noise, petrol fumes and burning tyres.
For people like us, the Goodwood Festival of Speed will always remain a place to receive such annual therapy.
