Massa targets Silverstone podium

5 July 2012

Felipe Massa says he is targeting a first podium finish of the season in this weekend's British Grand Prix at Silverstone.

Having produced an impressive performance to take sixth in Monaco, Massa then added another point with tenth in Canada only for his bad luck to return in Valencia – with various issues over the course of the race leaving him a lap down in 16th while team-mate Fernando Alonso stormed to victory.

With the Brazilian widely seen to be fighting for his future with Ferrari, a strong result at Silverstone would do him no harm with Massa saying his target was to try and secure a first podium on British soil.

“Last year we started in the rain and then it got dry towards the end and I finished fifth, so this year my plan is to aim to fight for a podium,” he said. “It's something I really want to do because I have never been on the podium in this race. Every year there is a chance of rain at this event and that always means you have to be ready to react quickly to any situation that can arise. That's especially true this year when most of the cars are so close. I really enjoy driving here anyway and I'm looking forward to having a good fight whatever the conditions.”

Massa added that he felt he was improving when it comes to getting the most from the 2012 Ferrari, even if his results haven't always reflected his potential.

“If we can put everything together properly, then the results will come and those results will make things much easier for the future,” he said. “I am still moving forward in terms of my understanding of this year's car.

“The situation began to improve in Monaco where we managed to finish where we were supposed to. Then, that was not the case in Canada in terms of results, even though we were very strong there too. I made a stupid spin, which I still don't understand, as I was not trying to brake later than usual. Then we come to Valencia where a good result was in my grasp. And that is still the case because the car is getting better and I feel I am getting stronger race by race.”
