McLaren's Jenson Button was the big casualty in first qualifying at the British Grand Prix, joining the 'usual suspects' on the sidelines.

Button languished in the danger zone for much of the session with light rain failing throughout. Despite a late stop to grab fresh intermediates, the Englishman was unable to make it out of the bottom 18.

Button was joined on the sidelines by the Caterham's of Vitaly Petrov and Heikki Kovalainen, who will start 19th and 20th. Then came Timo Glock for Marussia, who spun at the end on the pit straight, followed by the HRTs of Pedro de la Rosa and Narain Karthikeyan. Charles Pic failed to set a time within the 107 percent and will now need the stewards okay to race.

At the front meanwhile, Sebastian Vettel was quickest on a 1m 46.279s, followed by Nico Hulkenberg and Pastor Maldonado. Sergio Perez, Fernando Alonso, Michael Schumacher, Kamui Kobayashi and Romain Grosjean held positions four through to eight, with Bruno Senna and Daniel Ricciardo completing the top ten.

More to follow after Q2...
