Bottas quickest again at Silverstone
Reigning GP3 champion Valtteri Bottas sets the fastest time of the day again – not that there was much competition...
Valtteri Bottas led the way again today on the second and final day of the 'alternative' Young Driver test at Silverstone, with Williams and Marussia now the only two teams in attendance, after HRT completed its programme on Thursday.
The Finn, who has been a regular in Friday morning free practice at grand's prix, posted a 48.963 second lap on the shorter International Circuit. In total he did 170 tours, with conditions generally dry.
“It was another successful day today for the team, with a trouble-free performance and no problems with the car. It was useful to get some longer runs in again today and it was good for me to get a better understanding of the tyres, and how the team works,” said Bottas. “We were lucky with the weather today considering the forecast, as we were able to do most of the runs in the dry, despite a bit of dampness early on.”
“It was another good test for the team here at Silverstone, today running on the shorter International Circuit,” added Williams' senior operations engineer, Dominic Harlow. “We were able to get a good evaluation of several new components across various systems on the car as part of the ongoing development, alongside giving Valtteri more mileage in the car. Valtteri again drove well, whilst the weather held up, enabling us to achieve another productive day for the team.”
Max Chilton meanwhile led the charge for Marussia, 0.969 seconds off Bottas. He did 52 laps this afternoon, having taken over the car from GP2 team-mate and rival Rio Haryanto.
“After further productive time in the car this afternoon, I'm heading home feeling very happy with how the two days have gone for me,” said Chilton. We've been particularly lucky as, given the weather in England at the moment, I managed to get two half days of dry running.
“I feel like I got to grips with the car well and in turn I hope the team have benefited from the real-time work we have all done with the package today. It has been a fantastic experience and I can't thank the team enough for the experience and support.”
Haryanto was also pleased with his time in the car and he did 79 laps this morning, his best time a 50.405 second lap - 0.473 seconds off Chilton: “It has been another very positive experience with the Marussia F1 Team today. After yesterday's short afternoon of just 19 laps, this morning we achieved 79 laps, which was fantastic mileage, and therefore experience, for me,” he added.
“The programme was not easy, and there were a lot of new and different things to learn. The team pushed me hard, but this is what I need to be able to show my potential. We also got a lot of work done for the team to prepare for the next Grand Prix.
