Nico Rosberg will take a five place grid penalty for the German Grand Prix after Mercedes elected to carry out a precautionary gearbox change ahead of the Hockenheim weekend.

The German made a solid start to the weekend in Friday practice, setting the seventh quickest time after two 90 minute sessions hit by mixed weather conditions.

Despite the fact he now has the penalty hanging over him ahead of Saturday's qualifying session, Rosberg said he felt confident about his chances for the weekend ahead having run well in the differing conditions that kick-started his home event.

"We learned a lot today as we were able to test in the different track conditions, and use the wet, intermediate and dry tyres," he said, "so I guess we are well prepared for whatever the weekend brings.

"Unfortunately we have to change my race gearbox here as a precaution after discovering an issue after Silverstone. So I will receive a five-place penalty which is a shame for our home race but I will push hard to gain a good result.

"As we have seen this season, a lot can happen in the race."
