Dennis 'pretty sure' Hamilton will stay

Ron Dennis: There's no reason Lewis won't be driving our cars in the future

McLaren Group chairman Ron Dennis has said he 'pretty sure' Lewis Hamilton will remain with the team in 2013.

Hamilton's current contract expires at the end of this season, but Dennis' comments echo those made by McLaren team principal, Martin Whitmarsh earlier this month, when he said he 'expects' the Englishman to agree a new long term deal [see separate story - HERE].

“There's no reason Lewis won't be driving our cars in the future,” Dennis told BBC Radio 5 Live.

“I think people get the wrong impression though,” he continued, “as when I last looked at the contract I was paying him. It's a question of whether we employ him, not the other way around.

“But if things pan out the way I expect them to I'm pretty sure he will be sat in a McLaren next year.”

As for how the rest of this season might go, Dennis added that he is confident the team can still win the championships.

“I think the fact we nearly won the last grand prix shows what our performance is really like,” he continued. “We have had a poor patch, but I think we are quite strong again now.

“Let's hope we have a good result in Hungary going into the summer break. There is another nine races to go [after Hungary], so we are well in with a chance in the championship.”
