Kovalainen: No change in situation

Heikki Kovalainen says nothing has changed when it comes to his F1 future
Heikki Kovalainen says there has been no change in the situation regarding his future in F1 despite ongoing rumours about where he will be racing in 2013.

The Finn is out of contract with Caterham at the end of the current season with speculation that he could elect to move elsewhere for 2013, with Sauber amongst those teams to be linked to the former Renault and McLaren man.

Kovalainen could of course stay with his current team for a fourth season, although he would be looking for the team to improve its performance to try and allow him to fight for a points finish for the first time since the 2009 season.

Speaking ahead of the Hungarian Grand Prix, Kovalainen said there was no change in regards to his future although talks would need to start soon to determine his plans.

“I think it's the time of the season where you hear a lot of rumours regarding a lot of drivers, and for me nothing has changed at the moment,” he said. “The only focus is improving our team and our car, and making the best out of what we've got. Then at some point we'll sit down with my management and sit down with Caterham first and then see what we'll do for the future.”

Kovalainen's next chance to try and score for the first time in Caterham colours will come in Hungary this weekend, where he secured his only F1 victory, and he said it was business as usual heading into an event which usually draws a large number of Finnish fans.

“It's too long since I won here,” he said. “It's just one weekend in the whole championship. Of course, as a Finn this feels a little bit like a home grand prix. We have a lot of people from Finland always turning up here. In that way it is perhaps a warmer feeling through the weekend than some of the races. But apart from that, it's business as usual.”
