Far from the glum visage that he carried after the opening day of the Hungarian Grand Prix, Mark Webber had more to smile about after the third and final practice session as he topped the times at the Hungaroring.

The Australian appeared to have suffered most from the FIA's decision to clamp down on engine mapping regulations in the wake of Red Bull's Hockenheim controversy, posting times outside the top ten throughout Friday, but bounced back to claim top spot with the quickest lap of the weekend so far, with a 1min 21.550secs effort that saw him edge day one pacesetter Lewis Hamilton in the hour-long session.

With conditions returning to hot and sunny, RBR sat 1-2 for a while, before Hamilton pieced together his best lap to slot into P2, just 0.093secs behind Webber, leaving Sebastian Vettel to fill third, 0.121secs behind his team-mate. In common with the rest of the field, all three leaders used the softer Pirelli to set their best times, with Hamilton switching later than the Red Bull drivers as he persevered on the medium compound.

Bruno Senna continued his strong weekend with fourth spot, putting his Williams ahead of championship leader Fernando Alonso, both sitting three-tenths off the pace and just ahead of the two Lotus drivers, Kimi Raikkonen ahead of Romain Grosjean, with Felipe Massa, Paul di Resta and Jenson Button rounding out the top ten. Button, on Friday form, should probably have been higher, but struggled to break into the top ten until his final lap lifted him above Pastor Maldonado.

If the Briton was frustrated, it was nothing to compare to the Mercedes duo, with Michael Schumacher and Nico Rosberg down in 17th and 18th respectively as they battled to get the W03 turned on in the heat. That put the two Germans behind the likes of Kamui Kobayashi, Jean-Eric Vergne, Nico Hulkenberg, Sergio Perez and Daniel Ricciardo, and ahead only of the expected tail-enders.

The final group was headed by Caterham pair Heikki Kovalainen and Vitaly Petrov, but there was a full second for the green machines to bridge in order to threaten the midfield, while Marussia and HRT languished further back by a similar margin.

Without the rain that blighted Friday, there were no serious offs to report, although several drivers resorted to using the run-off areas as they sought to extract everything from their laps.
