Mark Webber missed a shot at pole position at the Hungarian Grand Prix when Bruno Senna produced a better lap as time ticked down in the second phase of qualifying.
The Brazilian had yo-yo'd in and out of the drop zone but, having been pushed back below the cut-off by Nico Hulkenberg, bounced straight back to edge Webber by a couple of hundredths and condemn the
Red Bull driver - who had set the morning practice pace - to another early bath.
Webber's last-gasp exit overshadowed other surprises, including the loss of both Mercedes drivers, as Q2 produced a topsy-turvy order.
Nico Rosberg had tried his best to escape the 'drop zone' but Michael Schumacher remained mired at the bottom of the order, in 17th, for much of the 15 minutes. While Webber admitted to struggling with his second set of tyres, he still finished ahead of Paul di Resta, Rosberg, Sergio Perez,
Kamui Kobayashi and Jean-Eric Vergne, while both
Williams drivers made the top ten shoot-out for the first time in 2012.
Senna was tenth fastest, seven spots behind team-mate Pastor Maldonado, but no-one could touch Lewis Hamilton, who again set the pace with a 1min 21.060secs lap. World champion Sebastian Vettel, who again flirted with the drop, finished second fastest, with Felipe Massa, Kimi Raikkonen, Fernando Alonso, Jenson Button, Hulkenberg and
Romain Grosjean filled the gap between the two
Williams cars.
