Petrov not nervous about Caterham future

Vitaly Petrov believes his performances should be enough to earn him a second season with Caterham.

Vitaly Petrov has said he is 'not nervous' about his future and is confident he will remain with Caterham next year.

Petrov, who was dropped by Renault at the end of last season, joined Tony Fernandes' outfit back in February to replace Jarno Trulli. To date in F1 2012, the Russian has measured up reasonably well in comparison to his highly regarded team-mate, Heikki Kovalainen, and he believes his performances have been up to the required standard.

“I think after August [we might be able to say something about 2013],” Petrov said in an interview with F1news.ru. “Right now all the talk about driver changes has only just started. There is talk about Heikki leaving, rumours Felipe Massa will be kicked out [and dropped by Ferrari], so maybe this mess will continue until the end of the season.

“The main thing though is that my team is happy – and it has said so to the press and to me personally. When the team wants something from me and sets a goal, I do it and the question is immediately answered.

“If we were talking about [me] leaving Caterham or being kicked out, I would probably be a bit nervous. But because I have good results, and we work well within the team, I see no reason for that.”

So what can the team manage in the second half of the year?

“It is a really hard question to answer because I do not know what to expect,” Petrov added. “When I was at Renault we already knew at this point of the season that the car was losing speed and so to fight for a top-ten was difficult, but possible.

“But here the gap between us and Toro Rosso is too big and so far we have not reached the level that I can give any approximate predictions. It is hard to say what results we can expect.”

To be fair he has improved since he first came into F1. He was the crash kid for awhile. But he seems to be able to get a similar performance to Kovi out of that car which I think is probably the max.
