Sebastian Vettel and Red Bull Racing made a sluggish start today to the 2012 F1 Italian Grand Prix.

Vettel, who took the runners-up spot in Belgium last weekend and who moved up to second in the drivers' championship to become Fernando Alonso chief threat, was only eleventh this morning in P1.

The second session this afternoon didn't go much better either, with the German finishing 13th on a 1 minute 26.394 seconds, over a second off the pace set by McLaren's Lewis Hamilton.

"I think overall we are not as quick as we would like to be, so there's still work to do," Vettel admitted ahead of the 13th round in the championship. "I think we are more competitive in race trim, but we aren't where we want to be yet in terms of true pace.

"We ran through our entire programme, however, so we got a lot of information to go through and learn from."

Team-mate Mark Webber meanwhile was also off the pace and while he was slightly quicker than Vettel, he was still only ninth in P1 and eleventh in P2.

The Aussie is convinced though that they will be able to close up on Saturday ahead of qualifying.

"We're working hard, but we're not there yet. We were a bit more competitive on the longer runs in practice today. We're not normally the Friday World Champions, so we'll do some work now for tomorrow. We often find a good step ahead of qualifying," he added.
