Alonso: Hamilton correct to consider McLaren exit

Ferrari driver Fernando Alonso believes Lewis Hamilton is right to be considering leaving McLaren at the end of this season – and the Spaniard added that his decision to quit the Woking-based team at the end of 2007 was 'the best of my life'.

Speculation about what Hamilton might do has been rampant for some time now, but in the build-up to the Italian Grand Prix last weekend at Monza, it intensified after former team boss-turned-BBC analyst Eddie Jordan said a deal between the Englishman and Mercedes could be 'imminent'.

Indeed on Friday, there was talk that his future could be decided by Singapore with it 'no better than a 50-50 chance' that he will stay with McLaren [see separate story – HERE], and now Alonso has offered his own opinion on the matter.

“It [leaving McLaren] was the best decision I've taken in my life,” Alonso said during a media event in Spain this week, according to Marca and SPEEDtv.com, although of course it should be remembered his time in Woking ended badly after the so-called 'Spygate' affair.

“If Hamilton is also evaluating that option [to leave and go to Mercedes], I don't see why anyone should say it is not possible.

“McLaren is a strong team, but they won the World Championship in 2008 only at the last corner of the last race.

"If we remove that title, you have to go back a long way to find another one,” he pointed out.

Alonso only left McLaren because he couldnt get on with Hamilton and having a strong team mate that can beat him. I mean why leave McLaren for Renault that couldnt win races the following year while McLaren won the 2008 WC.

If Hamilton went to Ferrari, it will be fireworks again like in 2007 when these were together.

Alonso is like Schumacher who like and want a weak team mates and have all the glory.
