Pirelli to give Kubica test chance in 2013?

Robert Kubica in frame for Pirelli test role next year

Pirelli boss Paul Hembery has confirmed that former BMW and Renault driver Robert Kubica could get the test role with the tyre company in 2013.

Kubica, who appeared set for a strong 2011 campaign before suffering serious injuries while competing on the Ronde di Andora rally between pre-season tests, continues to make progress in his recovery and recently won the Ronde Gomitolo di Lana rally earlier this month.

However, reports from the rally also confirmed just how limited Kubica's mobility remains, with his injured right arm particularly affected. According to Brazil's Agencia Estado, while the Pole was obviously able to drive the car, a lot of what he did outside of the cockpit - including holding his trophy and champagne - had to be done with his left arm.

Kubica himself, though, remains fairly optimistic that he will be able to find his way back into the top flight, although he has admitted that he is not expecting to find a seat next season.

The test role with Pirelli, however, could be the perfect way for him to continue his recovery programme and fulfil his hopes of possibly getting back to F1 in 2014.

“We are more likely to work with Robert in rallying I guess, rather than F1, but we will see,” Hembery told Sky Sports F1 ahead of the Singapore Grand Prix.

“I haven't spoken to Robert for some time, but we are working on a few projects that might involve him, so it [the test role] might be a possibility.

“I don't know if he is able to do it at the moment. But he is that type of person if, physically, he could get back in, maybe doing a year with us would put him in a good situation to come back in 2014.

“It would be wonderful if we could do that. We want to continue our success level of helping drivers into F1, and after an F1 drive the Pirelli test deal has to be the best drive in the world.”
