Alonso: A miracle if we can take title

Fernando Alonso says it will be a miracle if he wins the 2012 F1 title
Fernando Alonso says it will be a miracle if he is able to secure his third F1 title this season, despite the fact he currently holds a 29 point lead in the standings with just six races to go.

The Spaniard has enjoyed a fine season with Ferrari, despite the fact that its 2012 car hasn't been the quickest car on the grid, with his consistency playing a key role in him keeping his rivals at bay.

Speaking in Suzuka ahead of the Japanese Grand Prix however, Alonso insisted he was still surprised to be the championship leader and said it would be a miracle if he was to end the year as champion given where Ferrari was at the start.

"It's a little miracle that we are in first position,” he was quoted by Sky Sports. “We have no comparison between the car that we have and our opponents' car, especially in the first six or seven races where we were out of Q3 and 1.5 seconds behind.

"So it's a little gift that we were in first position from the middle of the Championship. Now the car has improved, we are more regularly on the podium, so now we seem to be able to keep the distance. We'll see what happens from now to the end. If we can fight for the Championship and if we win it will, as I said, be a miracle because I don't think we were fast enough to do it.

"We'll do the maximum. We did 14 more or less perfect races until now. What we cannot do now is mistakes in the last six.”

The Spaniard added that the fact he tops the charts was down in no small part to the fact that Ferrari has been able to maximise its performance more than its rivals on race days.

"Every year you improve things and you learn from mistakes,” he said. “For sure this year, so far, we've been quite consistent. I think we've extracted the maximum from the car at every race.

"I'm very, very pleased and happy with our year. Not just myself only personally driving, also the team because here on the trackside, on set-up, strategy, pit-stop calls etc, I think we've maximised every Sunday the points.

"But there's still six (races) to do and we need to continue in the same way."
