Boullier: Lotus have taken clear step forward

Eric Boullier says the teams new exhaust system could help give them a bit of an edge in the final four races

Lotus team boss Eric Boullier believes the Enstone-based outfit can still take third in this year's Constructors' championship.

Lotus introduced its new Coanda-effect exhaust in Korea last weekend and Boullier reckons they will be able to utilise this development even more at India's Buddh International Circuit as they look to close the 29-point gap to McLaren and improve upon Kimi Raikkonen's fifth place finish and Romain Grosjean's seventh place in Yeongam.

“I think if we look at the last two or three races objectively then we've had our difficulties, but we've also seen a clear step forward in terms of performance with the new exhaust system in Korea,” Boullier commented ahead of the 17th round in the F1 2012 World Championship.

“The team did a brilliant job to bring such a significant upgrade to the race and make it work first time and there is still a lot more to come from this concept once we have had some more time to work with it.

“I think we should now be looking to push both cars into the top five during qualifying which will give us a much better chance of bringing home some good points in the fight for third place in the Constructors' Championship.

“There's no denying it will be difficult [to take third], but having said that there are still four races left, and four good opportunities to score points. The key will be to make sure we have good reliability from the E20 and our drivers, with both cars finishing solidly in the points every weekend.”

Meanwhile, Boullier added that while the hectic end to the 2012 season isn't easy, it is not something that worries him and he has complete faith in 'his troops' focus and motivation.

“This is a challenging time of year for everyone, as with six Grand's Prix in nine weeks the logistics of getting developments finished and fitted to the cars between races take a huge effort. Luckily though, I can be completely honest when I say that our race team motivation is never a problem,” he added.

“The people we have back at Enstone are not just highly professional, but also very dedicated to what we all love to do; and that is to go racing!” Boullier summed-up.
