McLaren team boss Martin Whitmarsh has admitted that
Sebastian Vettel has had things 'too easy' after storming into the F1 championship lead.
Victory in the last four races has allowed Vettel to roar into the championship lead with a 13 point lead over Ferrari's Fernando Alonso, with McLaren's
Lewis Hamilton retaining only the slimmest of slim hopes of winning a second title.
Red Bull could also wrap up the constructors' championship this weekend at Yas Marina and Whitmarsh admitted that his own team had made it too easy for the defending champions in the title race.
"They've a fast car, a driver who is consistent and the team has been doing a good job,” he was quoted by the
Daily Telegraph. “But we have made it all too easy for him. In India, for instance, we needed to get up there and give him a harder time at the start. But we weren't able to make anything stick, and instead our two guys found themselves fighting each other and Fernando on the first lap.
"That was probably the dream ticket for them (Red Bull), but they have done a great job."
It would now seem
McLaren will have to settle for another season without championship silverware in 2012 and Whitmarsh admitted that the only focus now was on going for race victories in the final three events of the year.
"Of course there's frustration and disappointment at not winning the constructors', but they're not the most useful emotions," he said. "We produced a solid performance in India where we were quick at the end, although we were not quick enough at the beginning, and we had underperformed in the two races prior to that.
"The fact is we've three races to go, the motivation is very high, which you can sense in Lewis, within everyone in the team. We want to go out and win some more races before the end of this year. That's all we can focus on now."
