Fernandes to quit as Caterham team principal

Tony Fernandes has confirmed rumours that he is to step down as team principal of Caterham F1 after three years in the role.

Tony Fernandes looks set to relinquish his control over the day-to-day running of the Caterham F1 team in order to focus on other business interests within the wider Caterham Group.

Rumours that surfaced in the wake of Sunday's Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, and the ensuing announcement that Caterham Cars was to enter a partnership with Renault to design and build a range of sports vehicles, were confirmed in an interview Fernandes gave to Autosport and Autocar.

The Malaysian has always intimated that he did not intend to remain as team principal of the F1 squad for the long term, and probably considers that his three-year tenure is longer than he initially anticipated when he launched the Lotus name back into F1 in 2010. According to Motor-Total.com, Jean-Francois Caubet – who retired as deputy MD of Renault Sport at the weekend – is being touted as a possible replacement for Fernandes, while both Riad Asmat and Cyril Abiteboul, respectively CEO of the Caterham Group and F1 team MD, will also be the subject of speculation.

Fernandes remains tight-lipped on the subject of his successor, except to say that the individual is already involved in F1 – and has already accepted the Caterham position.

“We are definitely better at business than finding tenths of seconds around a lap,” Fernandes said of himself and deputy chairman Dato' Kamarudin Meranun, "It was right for us to lead the team initially and set a template of how it should be. That vision is now set and the team is ready to move forward to the midfield."
