Hill: Don't write off Alonso

21 November 2012

1996 F1 champion Damon Hill reckons Sebastian Vettel still has his work cut out if he is to win his third drivers' title in Brazil.

Vettel goes into the title deciding season finale this weekend with a 13-point advantage over Fernando Alonso, but Hill isn't convinced that will be enough, and has warned that 'anything is possible' at Interlagos.

“If he was up against any other opponent, I would say that Sebastian would definitely win being 13 points ahead,” Hill told German newspaper, Die Welt. “But you cannot write off an opponent like Fernando.

“He is such a clever driver and he always seems to pull off something extraordinary. Anything is possible in Brazil.

“Yes, Vettel has an advantage, no question. But if I had to put a percentage on it, I would say the odds are 65 to 35 in favour of Vettel.”

Despite all that though, Hill has no doubt Vettel is destined to become one of the sports all time greats.

“If he wins in Brazil, then you can certainly see him winning two more world championship – at least...” Hill added.

“He has long established himself as a driver with good experience. He's also been around a while now too. His routine is one of his strengths. Someday he may perhaps even be able to attack Michael Schumacher's record of seven world titles.

“That is still a long way away though. But he can certainly venture into this region,” Damon concluded.
