Button hopes to challenge for victory

Jenson Button eager to go for victory in the Brazilian Grand Prix
Jenson Button says he is eager to fight team-mate Lewis Hamilton for victory in the Brazilian Grand Prix after qualifying on the front row of the grid at Interlagos.

Button was edged out of top spot by Hamilton during the session as McLaren secured a record-breaking 62nd front-row lock-out – with the pair having also paced all three practice sessions in Sao Paulo.

Without any titles at risk, the McLaren duo will now hope to end the season on a high and Button said he was keen to try and wrap up his campaign with a trip to the top step of the podium.

“We're there to win the grand prix as I think every driver it, unless it's team-mates fighting for the world championship,” he said. “So, we both want to win the race tomorrow, that's the aim for both of us. So we'll see what we can do. The car seems to be working very well in the dry, our long-run pace is pretty good, but there's a massive chance of rain tomorrow and that just throws it up in the air for us.

“For us starting near the front it's hopefully going to be a very exciting race. We just have to hope that the rain level is OK for us to actually race. That's always the worry here in Interlagos.”

Button added that a strong result was important for McLaren as it continues to work towards the 2013 campaign, where it will hope to return to championship contention.

“It's great for us to both be on the front row, especially as it's Lewis's last grand prix for the Vodafone McLaren Mercedes team,” he said. “This race is important for us. Obviously, we're out of contention for the world championships, but this weekend's and last weekend's performances are very encouraging for next year, which will become our focus immediately after tomorrow's race.”

If Lewis has a dnf and Button wins Lewis would still finish with higher pints than Button by two points. It seems Lewis has seen off Button again it, 2010-2012 stands at 2-1 to Leis and quali in 2012 is 15-5 absolute slaughter
