Robert Kubica saw his latest appearance on the rally stages end in disappointment after the former F1 racer was forced to retire on the final day of Rallye du Var.
Kubica was again competing at the wheel of a Citroen C4 WRC and was looking to build on the victory he secured on Rally di Como a week earlier.
The former BMW
Sauber and Lotus man, seeking to continue his recovery from injuries sustained in an accident while competing on a rally last year, had been in dominant form to establish a lead of more than five minutes after Freddy Loix crashed out on Saturday.
Kubica looked set to take his second win in as many weekends until the penultimate stage, when he went off the road and hit a tree.
Although his car caught fire after the incident, Kubica escaped without any injury, with victory in the event instead going to Cedric Robert at the wheel of a Super 2000 Peugeot 207.
