Ferrari seeks 'clarification'

Ferrari has apparently been in touch with the FIA regarding the yellow flag controversy arising from last Sunday's Brazilian Grand Prix.
Ferrari has taken the next step through the confusion prompted by suggestions that new F1 champion Sebastian Vettel may have passed Jean-Eric Vergne in a yellow flag zone during the Brazilian Grand Prix.

The Scuderia has confirmed that it has written to the FIA seeking the governing body's explanation of footage that appears to show the German breaking the rules on lap four of the Interlagos race.

There has been some confusion as various video clips have appeared on the internet, some showing a green flag waving to the left of the circuit, and others notable by its absence. Vettel appears to pass the waved flag before going on to pass Vergne on lap four of the race, despite yellow light noards also being illuminated. According to the letter of the law, a flag takes precedence over the light boards, suggesting that Vettel may have been right in his decision to pass the Toro Rosso.

Ferrari, however, has now decided to make the situation official by contacting the FIA, although it has stopped short of launching a formal protest.

"Ferrari has asked, in a letter, for a clarification from the FIA about the overtaking of VET VER during the 4th round of the Brazilian Grand Prix," the Scuderia's Twitter feed confirmed.

Should the race stewards, who can be asked to reconvene to investigate the claims, decide that Vettel is guilty, he would be assessed a 20-second post-race penalty that would drop him to eighth and leave him one point shy of Fernando Alonso in the standings. However, it is thought unlikely that the situation will come to this.
