Sebastian Vettel may have won the drivers' championship for the third year in succession in 2012, but the outcome was by no means certain.

Indeed the fight went right to the wire and in the end the Red Bull Racing pilot finished with just 3 points more than arch rival Fernando Alonso following a dramatic final race in Brazil.

With eight different winners over the 20-race campaign and six world champions on track - more than at any stage in the past - Sir Jackie Stewart recently said it was 'as good as we could have had'.

Any championship where the champion isn't known til the last minute of the last event has got to be fundamentally exciting not just in terms of the races but the conjecture leading up to each.
Normal folk would have just seen five, then four, then three, then two very talented sportsmen going at it full-bore, unlike our pathetic selves with our loves and hates, chips on shoulders (yes even me with mr whiplash, ms) and faux-insider-knowledge. Personally I saw some fine drives and some unfathomably rubbish ones, some 'strange' events (SP falling off the track and allowing FA to win) and one tear-inducing moment (Williams first win for ages). WAY better than any of the ms years.
