Lauda quits Air Berlin board

Niki Lauda has stood down from the board of directors at Air Berlin in order to concentrate on his new role with the Mercedes F1 team.

Lauda took up a management role with the Mercedes F1 team at the end of last year, with his appointment confirmed in the wake of the announcement that the squad had successfully poached Lewis Hamilton from McLaren.

Initially it was thought that the 63-year-old would work alongside Mercedes team principal, Ross Brawn and Mercedes motorsport boss, Norbert Haug. However Haug stood down at the end of 2012 by 'mutual agreement'. Haug later said the team's poor performance was the reason for his exit, rather than the arrival of Lauda.

Lauda, who won the F1 drivers' title in 1975, 1977 and 1984, previously held a management role with the now defunct Jaguar F1 team. He was also a consultant for Ferrari between 1992 to 1997.

He has this tendency for quitting and walking out, as he did in the 70's (if Im not mistaken) when he walked out of his F1 driver job in Canada (...."Im tired of driving around in circles" he said back then). Well anyway, looks like he is taking his new role with MercedesF1 seriously but I just cannot see him working any miracles...time will tell.

shaken. a rather cruel comment. niki was extremely badly injured at the ring. he made a miraculous return, against all oddsand still could have won the wdc. the race in japan was very wet, and as a person who had been near death, niki decided that to race was just too risky. it takes a very brave man to risk throwing away a wdc!

in canada, after a come back, he decided he had had enough. made a sensible decision and called it a day. that is hardly "quitting". he had other interests such as founding his airline which was subsequently merged with austrian, but then started up a new airline, NIKI. possibly helped by air berlin who put him on their board.

i have far more regard for niki than i would have for 90% of the current grid
