Stefano Domenicali has admitted that a strong start to the 2013 season will be vital for Ferrari if it wants to challenge for the F1 title.

The team remained in contention for the drivers title last year with Fernando Alonso, despite struggling in the early stages of the campaign with its F2012.

Quoted by Auto Motor und Sport, Domenicali admitted that Ferrari wouldn't make the same mistakes as it did last year and said the early phase of the season would be vital before teams turn focus to 2014 - when new rule changes are set to come into force.

"What happened to us last year in the Jerez test will not be repeated this year," he said, referring to the troubles Ferrari faced from the moment its car hit the track in Spain during pre-season testing.

"Next season will be decided in the first races. The teams will do their work for 2013 and then move on to the preparations for 2014.

"I think that this switch will happen in July, so you will need to start the year well."
