FanVision will not be available at F1 circuits in 2013 after it was unable to agree new terms with Formula One
FanVision, which began life as Kangaroo TV, gave trackside fans the chance to rent or buy a device, dubbed a 'FanVision Controller', which then gave them access to instant replays, live timing information and race commentaries. However, the service will not continue this year, although precisely why is not clear.
“As you know, we have, for some months, been trying to find the basis of an agreement between FanVision and FOM in order to continue providing the service in F1 in 2013,” read a statement from FanVision.
“Unfortunately it is now clear that we are not going to be able to agree terms with FOM and very reluctantly we have to confirm that we won't be in F1 in 2013. It's a big blow for us.”
A spokesperson for FanVision added that recent years had been particularly fruitful.
“We achieved our best in revenue terms the past two years and made huge progress in developing relationships and working together with promoters, press, teams and their sponsors...”
Meanwhile, respected F1 pit reporter for NBC
/ GP3 commentator, Will Buxton has pointed out via Twitter that it won't just be the trackside fans that lose out in 2013, as it will also negatively affect the media coverage if there is no alternative offering.
“Big shock as FanvisionF1 will NOT continue in F1 in 2013. Such a crucial tool for us in the pits and for fans trackside. Massive shame,” Buxton wrote. “Losing FanvisionF1 will have a big impact on the way pit reporters do their job. It's a huge shame an agreement couldn't be reached with FOM
“Journos in the media centre have timing screens. For us in the pits FanVisionF1 was a vital link to timing data and race control messages. As such it won't just affect us on the ground, but because of how it will affect us in the job we do, it will affect the fans at home too.
“If the plan is to replace FanVision with the F1 app, they're going to have to sort out network coverage on event, which crashes due to load.
“But perhaps that is where TATA, as F1's official 'connectivity partner', will come into the mix...”
