Massa: I know I can win in 2013

17 January 2013

Felipe Massa says he is confident that he can fight for victories during the 2013 F1 season, and hasn't ruled out joining team-mate Fernando Alonso in fighting for the championship crown.

The Brazilian looked like losing his drive with Ferrari after a disappointing start to the 2012 campaign but was able to rebound in the second half of the year – picking up two podium finishes and extending his deal with the Scuderia for another year.

With team boss Stefano Domenicali insisting that keeping Massa was the right decision, the 31-year-old will be keen to repay the team for its faith during the season ahead and said he was sure he could be in the mix at the front of the field during the year ahead.

“You need to believe in what you can do,” he was quoted by JamesAllenonF1 from Ferrari'sWrooom event. “I believe in myself, I know I can be a champion, I know I can win, I know I can be what I was all my career. I think after you understand yourself it makes you stronger and stronger all the time.”

Massa also opened up on the difficulties he faced on track last year, insisting that a change in his mental attitude had played a part in his improvements on track during the second half of the campaign.

“Maybe I was not enjoying my job so much, maybe I was not happy,” he said, looking back to the first half of 2012. “I am happy now. When you get into the car and want to have fun and enjoy it, that is when you can do your job in the best way possible. By doing that you can have a year like 2008.

“It is not that the car changed that much from August in reality. There was also a change from my side. Even if 90 per cent of people do not want to believe in me any more, it is important that you believe so you are not good one day and bad the day after.”
