With the news that Timo Glock could be heading for the DTM in 2013 rather than spending another year pounding around at the back of the F1 field with Marussia, an unexpected opportunity has opened up for the myriad drivers still chasing a seat at the top table.

Vitaly Petrov and Sebastien Buemi are the popular picks, but the likes of erstwhile Marussia candidate Luiz Razia, well-funded Bruno Senna, GP2 champion Davide Valsecchi, former Toro Rosso driver Jaime Alguersuari and even Kamui Kobayashi - who had given up on his chance of racing this year despite the fund-raising efforts of his fans - could all be in the frame.
