Timo Glock admits that it was the 'right time for him to make a change' after confirmation that he will move to the DTM following his departure from the Marussia team.
Glock split with the team that he has been part of for the past three seasons earlier this week, with a need to secure additional funding playing a major part in Marussia reaching an agreement to part company with the German.
That announcement was quickly followed by confirmation that the 30-year-old was to test BMW's DTM machine in Spain, with the manufacturer then confirming that it had agreed a deal for Glock to complete it's 2013 driver line-up
It brings the curtain down on Glock's F1 career after just short of 100 races but he admitted that he felt the time was right to take his career in a different direction.
“It was not always easy to spend three years in Formula One regularly watching other drivers from behind who were sometimes doing a worse job than me, but were still way ahead as they were in better cars,” he said, looking back at his spell with the Virgin/Marussia team.
“You want to finally be back challenging at the front of the field again and are hungry for good results. This hunger became more intense over the winter. Now is the right time for me to make a change. I am really up for the DTM.”
Glock added that he was looking forward to the more open nature of the DTM and the fact that he will no longer have to deal with the stress of travelling the world with the F1 circus.
“I came to love the proximity to the fans during my year in the USA [in Champ Car] in 2005,” he said. “That proximity is also present in the DTM. Formula One, in which the drivers are always very isolated from the outside world and can rarely give anything back to the fans, could learn a thing or two from the way the DTM is so open to its fans.
“When you are a potential winner in Formula One, it is no problem to spend three or four weeks in a row on the road. However, when you don't have any great prospects, the stress really takes its toll on your body. That will be a little less in the DTM, but I still expect a tough and intense year. I will spend every minute between races thinking about how I can improve and be as well prepared as possible.”
