van der Garde to Caterham imminent?

An optimistic tweet from Giedo van der Garde has raised speculation that he could be confirmed as Caterham's second driver before the weekend.
Regardless of whether Luiz Razia alleged deal with Marussia is formally announced today (Friday), the GP2 Series could claim another F1 graduate if speculation that Giedo van Garde is about to join Caterham proves true.

The Dutchman has been in the frame to partner Charles Pic since the 2012 season ended, but confirmation has had to wait while the team worked through its options, including an on-off relationship with Vitaly Petrov amid rumours that he had secured a return to the Leafield line-up providing Russian backing came through.

Talks with Petrov reportedly broke down again a couple of weeks ago, leaving the road clear for van der Garde and the likes of Bruno Senna and Luiz Razia to restart negotiations. With Razia now appearing likely to be headed for Marussia in place of the ousted Timo Glock, Caterham could opt to promote 2012 reserve van der Garde to the full race seat he has been pursuing in the top flight for several seasons.

“This afternoon I will announce my future plans! stay put!" the 27-year old Dutchman announced on Twitter on Friday morning, adding to the speculation that he has moved ahead of Senna in the pecking order.

With Davide Valsecchi confirmed as reserve at Lotus, Razia strongly linked to Marussia, where he would partner Max Chilton, and Esteban Gutierrez signed by Sauber, the 2013 F1 grid is looking like a good advert for GP2, where five of the top six finishers last season could graduate. Only James Calado is missing from that group, and he has already re-signed to lead the Lotus assault in this year's feeder series. Jules Bianchi, who raced in GP2 prior to switching to the Renault World Series in 2012, remains the favourite to partner Paul di Resta at Force India, which launched with just one driver at Silverstone on Friday.

This is an absolute joke... Chilton Razia Van de Garde Bianchi etc. etc. Then we have left out people such as Kobayashi Algersuari Glock etc. etc. who, arguably (or certainly, in Kobby's case), deserve another chance! Here's another fact - excluding backing by car manufacturers, 10 teams in 2002 had title sponsors (the majority of which being non-tobacco), now it's just McLaren, Mercedes and Force India... BERNIE!!!!!! STOP PRICING EVERYON OUT OF THE SPORT!!!
