Gutierrez chases consistency

Esteban Gutierrez says consistency is the aim for his debut season as an F1 racer in 2013
Esteban Gutierrez says he is aiming for consistency during his maiden season in an F1 race seat in 2013.

The Mexican youngster will partner Nico Hulkenberg this year having been promoted into a race seat by Sauber after holding the role of test and reserve driver since late 2010.

Big things are expected of the former GP2 race winner as he looks to repeat the kind of results enjoyed by countryman Sergio Perez last season but the youngster insisted he wasn't getting too carried away with his aims for the year ahead.

“I try to put the pressure of being a Formula One driver to one side,” he told the official F1 website. “Pressure always goes together with the expectations of the people around you who all want you to have good results. But the first person wanting to have good results is me - not only for myself, but for the whole team.

“In terms of the upcoming season, I want to be consistent and, of course, I want to score points. I just have to be there if the chance comes up.”

Gutierrez added that the fact he has worked alongside the time for the past three years had made things easier as he steps into the race seat and said he felt the team was in a good position for the year ahead.

“It has definitely helped that I have had the opportunity to be involved with Sauber over the last three years. It was a steady progression getting to know the team, but I wasn't just learning about them; little by little I was also learning about how everything works in Formula One,” he said. “I experienced the atmosphere and got to witness how my fellow Mexican, Checo, was moving on. I had an exceptional look at it and was able to learn from it.

“I actually feel quite established now and I'll do everything I can to be as best prepared as possible for my first race in Australia. Right now, near the end of the test season, I think that everybody wants to go out do some racing. I feel that everybody is so eager for competition - at least that's what I am feeling very strongly. The adrenalin, the challenges of qualifying and then my first time on the grid - I can't wait!”
